Present Day
Since the abduction of two girls from the Athena Academy for the
Advancement of Women and their subsequent recovery, the alumnae
have been putting information together on the person behind the
abduction and think this individual may have been blackmailing the
academy’s founder, Marion Gracelyn, before her death. Now,
it’s up to forensic psychologist and FBI profiler Francesca
Thorne to determine if the different puzzle pieces that the others
have collected fit together. Is the former CIA-trained assassin
known as the Queen of Hearts also Arachne, a serial blackmailer
and criminal mastermind? And, if so, just who is she really?
Chesca’s search begins in Boston, but within hours of interviewing
her first witness, it becomes clear that someone is aware of Chesca’s
project. Back-up comes in the form of Will Evans, great-nephew of
Athena Academy’s headmistress, and an Army bodyguard on medical
leave. As Chesca works to uncover the identity of the Queen of Hearts
and connect her to Arachne, the investigation heats up in unexpected
ways, and Chesca and Will find out that the web Arachne has spun
reaches farther than anyone could have imagined.
While MOVING TARGET is an interesting book, it definitely helps
to have read the previous stories in the Athena Force series. Through
the four previous books the alumnae -- all of whom also belong to
Oracle, a super-secret intelligence organization -- have been collecting
information, and in this story, Chesca is trying to find the evidence
to tie all of the pieces together. Along the way, Chesca is forced
to interact with her upper-crust family and the mandatory social
obligations that go with being the Thorne family heir as well as
dealing with her inconvenient attraction to her new partner.
An enjoyable tale, especially for fans of the Athena Force series,
be sure to look for MOVING TARGET.
