Nibbles from Silk's Vault

BEYOND THE SHADOWS – Cricket Sawyer
ISBN: 1-934055-11-5
April 2007
Paranormal
RRT Rating: 4

Marrok, Michigan – Present Day

Nicole purchases the old log mansion, The Crystal Slipper, and hopes to turn it into a bed and breakfast. Finding a journal from Ambrosia, the previous owner, Nicole reads her dying account of all the men who visited the women at The Slipper, the violence, and the ghosts who walk the halls. Strangely, the last entry is dated 2001 even though Ambrosia died many years before that time. What was the ghostly vision that came to Nicole during the night and satisfied her every sexual fantasy? And then there is Thorpe, the handsome contractor, who arrives to work on the old house and leaves Nicole breathless…

An unusual story with a surprise ending, BEYOND THE SHADOWS is a tale not soon forgotten. A house filled with ghosts next to a cemetery, it is an eerie tale that will keep readers enthralled. Perhaps readers may even want to spend a night at this bed and breakfast inn?

United States – The Present

Alyce Kerr is a witch who wanted to make money through faith healing. She conjured a demon to help her, but the cost is proving too much. For each person she heals, she takes their disease into her body. Her demon, Buer, makes her continually work, and each day after she heals the sick, he sucks the illness from Alyce’s body and each time he does this he takes a bit of her soul. Her former boyfriend Ross tried to kill her. He is ignoring the restraining order Alyce has on him. He swears he only wants to help her.

It took me a little time to warm up to this story, but the premise sounded interesting and the romance intriguing, and Author Yolanda Sfetsos comes through on both. Urban fantasy readers will enjoy this short, but there is another in the works as this story is continued.
