| ALL FOR LOVE - Amanda Elyot The Scandalous Life and Times of Royal Mistress Mary Robinson New American Library Trade Paperback ISBN: 978-0-451-22297-8 February 2008 Historical Fiction England - 1750s to 1800 Mary Robinson has been known to historians as a poet, actress, and as George IV's first mistress while he was still Prince of Wales. Amanda Elyot has written this delightful novel, gleaning much of the details from Mrs. Robinson's autobiography. Mary Darby's father deserted her, her mother, and siblings when Mary was still young. At fifteen she married Thomas Robinson, who assured Mary's mother, and everyone else, that he was "well connected" and could provide very well for her. He turned out to be the illegitimate son of a wealthy man, and nothing more. Only after the family was placed in debtor's prison, due to Robinson's love of the ladies as well as his gambling debts, was young Mary forced to pursue a career on the stage in order to provide for her baby daughter. Her acting ability had been encouraged by several noted thespians before Mary's ill-advised marriage, and she lived up to their predictions. It was on the London stage where she was first noticed by the seventeen-year-old Prince of Wales, who proceeded to woo her via his aide, sending love letters and gifts. For several months, Mary held the prince at bay, thanking him for his thoughtfulness, but discouraging his attention. Despite her husband's wayward ways, Mary took her marriage vows very seriously. Her mentor, the Duchess of Devonshire, gave her advice to tread carefully, but eventually Mary succumbed to the heir-apparent's advances. Her life changed completely with that emotional decision. Mary Robinson's eventful and fascinating life is beautifully depicted in this excellent novel. Written in the first person, Mary's thoughts and dreams come to life. Pragmatic, but also romantic, Mary grew up in a time when husbands owned everything, including their wives' incomes, and Mary struggles for her entire adult life to provide a decent home for her daughter, but to also pursue her own wants and needs. Impeccable research and beautifully written, readers won't want to miss ALL FOR LOVE. It's an amazing peek into the life of a remarkable woman. Jani Brooks |
