Futuristic Romance - Short Story

The Planet of Dragnath, sometime in the Future

The Shenkiloi are an empathic race that has kept its existence hidden from most of the universe. Janeth, despite being told not to come, is on Dragnath to find her twin brother Darian. On a business trip, he sent a message telling the family he had gone into plenerty early. During this phase, Shenkiloi find their soul mates. If they don’t, they often die. If Janeth doesn’t find Darian very soon, the unthinkable will happen. The problem is since arriving on Dragnath, Janeth has also gone into premature plenerty. The change drains the empathic energy, but using the last of hers, Janeth sings a psychic call to draw a mate to her.

The AIA empathy corps sent Tom K’Restan, a low-level empath, to Dragnath to investigate empathic assaults. The planet was settled by immigrants from Old Earth’s Brazil and India and has few empaths. When the desperate empathic call for help comes, he knows it is from a very strong empath. He goes to investigate. The woman he finds tempts him not only with lust but also with the promise of a supply of telayin jewels, something all AIA agents have been told to secure.

CALL AND RESPONSE is a short, very sexy, well-done love story that is very dramatic and fast paced in a believable world. You feel the plight of Janeth and Tom’s response to her deception, and then to her as a person. There are several very intense and explicit love scenes, but they certainly fit within the plot line and only enhance the reader’s perception of Janeth as a loving and loyal person.
