She was the victim of a shooting, one in which her brother died, and she now has a tenuous relationship with her father and stepmother. So much so that she decided to leave her home in Illinois. She is shy around her employers and fellow employees, but Ames chooses to stick close by her side. It’s clear there’s a growing attraction building. She doesn’t know much about his past, and while we know something happened to him, this tale focuses mostly on Harper’s trauma. Ames, however, has become her protector. 

Despite the people around them, Ames and Harper spend time together. He introduces her to life on the ranch, including the dangers. She quickly finds herself enjoying it. Yes, it’s hard work, but she continues to enjoy picking up a book and reading in her evenings. While her life seems to be going well, there is danger lurking in the shadows. I won’t reveal who or how, but you will have to read this tale to find out what brings Harper to the brink of near devastation.
