Present Day Seattle and Moonlight Harbor, Washington

Celeste Jones lives in Seattle where she teaches first grade children. For the last year or so, she has been seeing a local policeman she has hopes of marrying. However, when he calls to break their night's date, as he's really feeling awful, she cooks up a pot of chicken soup and takes it to his place. She's surprised when he answers the door in swim trunks and a woman's voice calls to ask him if that's the pizza, and out she comes in a bikini.  Totally in shock, Celeste quickly closes up and sublets her house—summer vacation is beginning—and she leaves to spend the summer at the Washington shore town of Moonlight Harbor with her sister.

Celeste's older sister Jenna owns and runs a small resort, the Driftwood Inn, where Celeste can help out in exchange for a place to stay and recover. It isn't long before she settles in and meets and makes friends. The tale continues with introducing many characters, some met in earlier Moonlight Harbor books. Some are the Jones ladies' elderly Great Aunt Edie, Jenna's teenage daughter Sabrina, two men interested in Jenna (she's divorced) and some Jenna plans to introduce to Celeste.

And that's just the beginning. The Summer Retreat is a book that quickly catches a reader's full attention with its humor, quirky citizens (likable and not) who run from what appears to be a serial killer to the handsome pastor of the local church.

I had never read anything by Ms. Roberts, nor even heard of her, but now I want to go back for the earlier Moonlight Harbor books and taste her other series found at WWW.sheilasplace.com .
