Skye in the Highlands of Scotland, December 1688

It's a time of strife and change in England and Scotland as the reign of Catholic King James II gives way to his Protestant daughter, Mary, and her husband, William of Orange—who recently landed in England with his forces. The MacGregor stronghold, Camlochlin Castle on the Isle of Skye, has become a refuge for Protestant connections of the Catholic MacGregors, but is danger looming even here?

Finn Grant, the handsome, talented, and charming bard, is a resident of the castle who is just working up his nerve to tell Leslie Harrison of his love for her and his desire to make her his wife. He's just about at the sticking point—she's hoping to hear a declaration—when they are interrupted and told to come indoors for an announcement by Leslie's elder brother. Andrew tells the assembled friends that his family can now move back home to Dumfriesshire in the Lowlands and he's promised Leslie's hand in marriage to a supporter of William of Orange who has promised to protect them from the Stuart factions.

Leslie is soon put in the position of choosing between life with Finn and the safety of her family. Finn is not about to lose her or jeopardize those she loves.
