Angel's Bay, California - Present Day
Costume designer Isabella Silveira is on her way to Angel's Bay where her brother, Joe, is the police chief. She's isn't entirely sure why she's going, but the recent dreams she's had since Joe sent her a old family necklace make her believe that he, or someone, is in danger. Isabella has always had visions, although when she's acted on them, some events were not able to be prevented. Haunted by one in particular, she feels she must follow through on this premonition. Then, as she rounds the bend on the coastal highway near Angel's Bay, a car swerves in front of her and she loses control of her vehicle, which careens off the cliff. When she comes to, the car is precariously perched on the side of the hill and a man is trying to pull her free—the man she's seen in her dreams.
Nick Hartley reacts instinctively when he sees the car run off the road. How he got down the cliff is beyond his recollection, but he manages to get the frightened woman out of the car before it plunges into the ocean. They are lifted to safety by rescue personnel, and he figures he'll never see the woman again, although her reaction to him baffles him. She seems to recognize him, but he's sure he's never seen her before. Besides, he has other problems to deal with—his estranged fifteen year old daughter has been dropped on his doorstep by his ex-wife, and the girl wants nothing to do with her father.
Isabella is treated at the hospital and released to her brother's care. Joe is determined to find the car that forced her off the road, but he also has a missing girl to find. Annie, a new single mother, has vanished, leaving her baby behind. Dr. Charlotte Adams had taken the girl in until she decided whether to put her son up for adoption. Now Charlotte and Joe, who are attracted to one another, must work together to find the missing mother.
Fitting into small town life isn't easy for Isabella, but she is resolute in her need to find out what her dream is about and why it involves Nick Hartley. She volunteers to help out at the local playhouse where the actors are working on a new production, and many parts of her dream come to light. Isabella and Nick are thrown together as he works on restoring the playhouse, and her plans to move on as soon as she figures out her dream become complicated. She avoids commitment at all costs, and Nick seems to also, but something is pushing them together.
AT HIDDEN FALLS is the fourth book in the Angel's Bay series. Well rounded, complicated characters, a beautiful backdrop, and a series of mysterious happenings make this a real page turner. While this story stands on its own, I heartily recommend reading the entire set of Angel's Bay books.
