Orkney, Scotland - Present Day Jimmy Perez has lived on Orkney since leaving Shetland several years ago. He and his partner, Willow, have a young son, and another baby is on the way. Jimmy is still a police detective, as is Willow, who is actually his boss. On a very stormy night, Jimmy gets a call that his best friend, Archie Stout, is missing from his farm on the island of Westray, so Jimmy takes the ferry over to search for him. With the storm raging, Jimmy travels out to an archaeological site where he tragically finds Archie's battered body. He had obviously been hit on the head by one of the Westray story stones, apparently taken from the local historical society as the bloodied stone is nearby. This was clearly a planned murder. Growing up with Archie, Jimmy finds himself in the sad position of telling Archie's wife and sons about his death. The entire island knew him, of course, and everyone is stunned that someone among them might be a killer. With the aid of Willow, Jimmy sets out to methodically work through all possible scenarios. As the investigation proceeds, another person turns up dead in a similar way, but with the second Westray stone this time. Jimmy and Willow have several possible suspects, but something just isn't adding up. While Archie wasn't an angel, and he had been rumored to be visiting a woman who had just moved to the island, Jimmy couldn't imagine what Archie or the other victim had done to deserve being bludgeoned to death. The return of Jimmy Perez, the main character of the Shetland series, is even more exciting with the addition of Willow Reeves. They make a formidable team. Readers will enjoy their partnership, as well as the new setting in Orkney. A terrific mystery that will be a page turner for all. Jani Brooks |
