Portneath, England - Present Day Jules Capelthorne has returned to her hometown of Portneath to help her great-aunt Flo , who had a fall and is unable to run the family bookstore. But upon leaving London and arriving home, Jules discovers that the shop is in dire need of help. Even though the independent Flo still wants to be active, it's obvious to Jules that she will have to step in and try to resurrect the business that has been in her family for nearly a century. When her boss in London fires her for not returning immediately, Jules has no other choice but to stay in Portneath and figure out a new strategy, not only for the bookshop but for her life too. Jules grew up living with her mother and Aunt Flo above the small bookshop, so it doesn't take her long to settle in. Understanding the needs of the store will be more difficult. It has been a while since it was a profitable business, and with the rent renewal coming due soon, it's imperative that Jules find some new marketing strategies to boost their income. To make matters even worse, however, the Montbeau family, legendary enemies of the Capethornes, has opened a sparkling new bookshop across the street! Once Jules finds out that it's Roman Montbeau, one of the rich boys who laughed at her back in high school, she is even more determined to get the Capelthorne bookshop back on track. But will Roman make it more difficult when he seems to be attracted to her? THE BATTLE OF THE BOOKSHOPS is a cute tale set in a small coastal community where everyone knows everyone else and also knows their histories! The characters are charming, and the premise is entertaining. A quick, fun read. Jani Brooks |
